Re-Mapping Lagerloff

Re-Mapping Lagerloff

by HelenaForsas-Scott (Author)

Synopsis

For the first time ever, cutting-edge research about the Swedish Nobel Laureate Selma Lagerlof and her work is made available to a world-wide audience in one comprehensive volume. Written by an international group of scholars, this book highlights the interdisciplinarity of current Lagerlof research which frequently cuts across genres, media and disciplines. The perspectives and structure of the book, with sections dedicated to performance, film and intermediality, transnational narratives and European transmissions, are reinforced by the extensive introductory portal. The authors explore themes such as Lagerlof in cultural and political contexts, her involvement in the womens movement, the construction of her celebrity persona, her role for early Swedish film, the transnationality of her work and its impact in international contexts. The volume includes a number of illustrations that are rarely reproduced, and the detailed bibliographical section will contribute to making this an indispensable platform for Lagerlof scholarship for years to come. It also offers a model for interdisciplinary research in the arts and humanities.

Media Reviews
This is a volume which will make an important contribution to a vibrant and fast-developing field of research. The international reputation of Selma Lagerlof's works has received added impetus in recent years, not least thanks to the efforts of the three editors of this volume; yet there is a lack of scholarly research on her in English. Her life and her writings provide fascinating material for the study of self-presentation, cultural transmission, gender and genre. The availability of new and more accurate translations, together with the planned launch of a major research project on Lagerlof in Europe, make this an ideal moment to present a range of new perspectives by an impressive group of international scholars. --Janet Garton, MBE, MA, PhD, emeritus professor of European literature, University of East Anglia
A classic author revisited! A new and more comprehensive picture of the work of Selma Lagerlof emerges as leading scholars from a range of European countries and the U.S. explore her oeuvre, developing innovative perspectives and exploring previously neglected contexts of her work. --Professor Annegret Heitmann, University of Munich
This important volume is a welcome reminder of Selma Lagerlof's central position in world literature. With its many-facetted and innovative contributions, it will be an indispensable tool for Lagerlof scholarship for years to come. --Professor Lisbeth Larsson, University of Gothenburg
The work of Selma Lagerlof has been eagerly consumed throughout the world. Re-Mapping Lagerlof enlists the expertise of international scholars in the task of tracing Lagerlof's literary impact and plumbing the depths of her apparently simple, but enormously sophisticated texts. Especially in the wake of her recently released correspondence, there is much that remains to be learned about the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and this book is an important step in that direction. --Professor Susan Brantly, University of Wisconsin-Madison
