Media Reviews
A joyful fable that with great delicacy touches on themes of loss, adoption and integration... Jubilant verse, bold design and good looking 'wood cut' style illustrations. Carousel The production values are excellent making this a lovely gift book. School Librarian Upon opening this book, readers will be struck by the exciting and classy patterned endpapers: a pattern of racing black buffaloes against a teal background with a small white elephant standing out in one corner. Throughout the book, the illustrations maintain this upscale, arts-and-crafts look with their woodcut style and very limited palette: cream paper printed with black and periwinkle blue. The characters look lively and expressive, and the swooping text and varied page designs enhances the flow of the story. So we get another offering from the innovative Indian group Tara Publishing which will stand off the shelf. www.writeaway.org.uk
Author Bio
One of our most prolific children's book writers, Anushka Ravishankar has slowly but surely been securing her status as one of the best children's writers of her generation. Her expansive talent shines most brilliantly in her works of nonsense verse - jubilant and artful adaptations of this difficult genre to the cadences of Indian English. Said to be the pioneer of this form, she has earned national and international acclaim for her nine verse books released over the last decade. Rights to her books have been snapped up around the world and she has over 12 awards to her name. Her books owe their success not only to her fabulous verse, but to her willingness to collaborate and experiment with many different artists and designers - whether working with Swiss textile artists or veteran Indian illustrators, the best aspect of Anushka's work is the cohesion she creates between the text, typography and artwork of each scene. Christiane Pieper is a well-known German illustrator who has worked for some of Germany's most prestigious publishing houses, and has illustrated over 25 books, many of them award winners. She is particularly interested in capturing moods and movement in her pictures and revealing humour in the situations that she depicts. Since she grew up on a farm, she has a special interest in animals.
