Michelangelo (Caprese del Cansentino 1475-Rome, 1564) is one of the outstanding figures of the Italian Renaissance. He was a poet, sculptor, painter and architect. His architectural activity did not begin until 1519 when he designed the fa?ade of the San Lorenzo church in Florence. In the 1520s he also designed the Laurentian Library. Between 1519 and 1534 he worked on the project of the Medici family tombs and mortuary chapel, and their parish church, San Lorenzo. In 1538, under his supervision, work was started on the remodeling of the buildings around the Capitoline The apex of his architectural achievements was the Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome.
