This book offers an alternative take on the often mythologised and romanticised creative process of record-making, peering behind the studio door and taking the reader inside the commercial record production process. Side A introduces the idea that creativity is the result of a creative system and explores the history, culture, traditions and institutions that make up the creative system of commercial record production. Side B illustrates this creative system in action with chapters on songwriting, performing, engineering and producing, drawing upon case studies from John Lennon, David Bowie, Tupac Shakur, Bjoerk, Sylvia Massy and Rick Rubin. Importantly, each chapter challenges the romantic idea that creativity is something inexplicable or mystical and shows how each creative task contributes to creating the final recording.
