No. 82, 2006

Over 20 designers have contributed designs and personal writings to this book, the result being 26 eclectic and inspirational projects and a 'gallery' quality. The chapters vary from 'Beading for Protection' to 'Beading for Remembrance', and have a brief explanation for each. A glossary of techniques explains the different knots and stitches used and the straightforward instructions make it easy for you to start creating your own pieces.

This book examines the work of 23 bead artists and includes the how and the why of the pieces they produce. It shows the inspirational articles chosen by each artist; they discuss them and go on to show you how to make them. Some wonderful pieces are shown here and I wish the book had bigger pics as, for something like beading, you really do need to get in close. Included among them is a most incredible Chinese bridal crown based on a phoenix. That is just one of many wonderful artefacts shown. Obviously, in a book like this, some pieces are stronger than others but, even if the projects are not for you, the book generates an incredible number of ideas for you to explore to produce something of your own. This is an excellent book. The illustrations and diagrams are very good and they are drawn in a delightfully light hand. And the prose style is chatty. I really enjoyed reviewing this book even though I'm not a particularly beady beader.
