Synopsis

Celebrate the centenary of women getting the Vote by cooking and eating some of the Suffragettes' favourite meals. Dozens of vintage recipes contributed by some surprising supporters of the popular cause, including writers, state governors and even a judge. With none of the fads of modern-day cooking, these simple recipes range from hearty breakfasts to healthy soups, salads and meaty casseroles, alongside witty contributions such as Pie for a Suffragist's Doubting Husband or Anti's Favorite Hash. Why not create your own Suffrage Menu with recipes like Blanquette of Veal or Sweet Potato Souffle? Munch on some Parliament Gingerbread or a few Creole Balls? Or raise a toast to those who fought for equality of the sexes, by brewing up a Peppermint Cup? Originally published in 1915 to help raise funds for the campaign for the vote for women. With biographies of 30 of the top contributors including prominent suffragists such as Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, Jane Addams, and Fanny Villard, as well as famous writers Jack London and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. History and fun all in one book!

Media Reviews
Food may be the way to a man's heart, but it was also considered a path to the ballot box before 1920. For someone in search of an enjoyable way to get a feel for the suffrage movement, a cookbook is the way to go... What better than to present a cake such as Suffrage Angel Cake. Perfect for Get out the vote gatherings. Or when you're showing iron Jawed Angels as a fundraiser for your organization. Much better than store-bought sweets, the recipe can be distributed to guests when they leave your High Tea. But test the recipe first. Mrs. L.O. Kleber says she tested the recipes. But that was back in 1915. Serving these treats is a way to become closer to your grandmother's and great-grandmother's generations. *****Margaret Kearns
Author Bio
Little is known about the woman who compiled the cookbook, and tested the recipes herself, other than that she belonged to the Pittsburgh Equal Franchise Federation, was an ardent supporter of women's right to vote and that she collected most of the recipes from residents of West Pennsylvania.
