Percy Jackson's: History of the Percy Jackson Grammar School 1939-1968

by KenCooke (Author)

Synopsis

The opening of the Percy Jackson Grammar School in 1939 coincided with the onset of the Second World War, an ominous start for the life of a new school. In this informal history, the author chronicles the lifetime of this coeducational school, and with a light touch he considers whether schooldays really are the best days of your life. Drawing upon abundant recollections from former pupils - many of whom, like him, were the children of mining families and the first generation to attend grammar school - Ken Cooke covers topics as diverse as war-time evacuees, the school visit to the Festival of Britain in 1951, reactions to the 1968 conversion to a comprehensive, and the achievements of some of the school's alumni. This history is faithful to the facts, yet true to the sentiments.

Media Reviews
A nostalgic, humorous acccount by a former pupil who became a scientist... University of the Third Age Magazine A fascinating look back from the school's creation to its demise ... will no doubt be a winner with old pupils. Doncaster Advertiser I was particularly struck by the way you succeed in capturing the pluses as well as the minuses of life in those days, without losing a light touch. Prof Raymond Hide, Oxford University; Fellow of the Royal Society, and former PJGS student For all of us who went to school in the Forties and Fifties these memories ring a bell, no matter which school you went to. He has written the book in a very easy to follow way and makes for compelling reading. The Brodsworth Informer
