Media Reviews
'Horses in fairy tales more often than not have magical powers, either flight, invisibility or at the very least galloping faster than the wind. Magic Hoofbeats contains eight such tales retold by Josepha Sherman, ranging from North American to Basque, Russian to Albanian, and she writes an introduction to each about the different breeds of horse. Linda Wingerter's glowing, enamelled-effect illustrations add panache' - Children's Bookseller 'Brave horses, strong horses, horses flying, galloping and prancing - all are celebrated in these passionate stories from many cultures.' - The Guardian 'Dazzling illustrations and unputdownable stories' - British Horse Society 'This is a fabulous anthology of stories for anyone who loves horses. I found it really enjoyable and informative.' - Absolute Horse
Author Bio
Josepha Sherman is a best-selling author and Horse Whisperer as well as a keen folklorist, specialising in comparative folklore. Her most recently published work is Mythology for Storytellers (2003). When not busy writing and editing, Josepha loves to travel. A natural horse-lover, she has been privileged enough to have a newborn foal fall asleep at her feet. This is her first project with Barefoot Books. Linda Wingerter grew up in Maine and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. With her sensitive, velvet-textured canvas, she has won much acclaim for her previous projects in children's illustration. Having spent a number of years on a horse farm, she has been able to throw herself into this project with great affection. Although currently living in West Haven Connecticut, she remains primarily inspired by the woods and fields of her childhood.
