Opportunity Knocks: 31 (Soundings S.)

by Jonathan Rutherford (Editor)

Synopsis

Several contributors discuss the government's policies on children, childcare and education, where the overwhelming motivation seems to be a utilitarian focus on workforce considerations: there is little evidence of policy derived from its stated commitment to emotional literacy. We explore the implications of living in neo-liberal times for the generation that are Blair's children - whether babies, school-children, teenagers or students. Contributors also look at alternative political strategies for the future, including analysis of the slow food movement, a discussion on the politics of ethical consumption, an essay arguing for an end to the pursuit of growth in the rich countries of the world, and a set of proposals for a different way of running the money system.
