One Among Equals: England's International Rugby Captains

One Among Equals: England's International Rugby Captains

by SteveLewis (Author)

Synopsis

On 27 March 1871 Frederick Stokes led England out at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh for the first rugby union international. That Scotland defeated the visitors is a matter of record but since that landmark date England have played over 600 capped matches and 121 players have followed in Stokes' footsteps. Some experienced extraordinary success while for others the journey was often short and disappointing. Will Carling, Martin Johnson and Bill Beaumont are among those who became household names but many are not as well remembered and on this journey around the country, players such as Fred Bonsor, Harry Alexander and Joe Mycock will also be acknowledged as recipients of the highest honour the Rugby Football Union can bestow on a player. In One Among Equals, Author Steve Lewis interviews many of the greats including Dickie Jeeps, Roger Uttley, Peter Wheeler, Rob Andrew, Jason Leonard and many others, in this story of the 122 players who had the honour of leading their country.
