Details of a thirteenth century chapel at Denby, a 17th century manorial prison and a bed hopping scandal at lower Denby in 1822 alongside much more. The industrial revolution saw the rise of families such as the Hinchcliffe's, Kenyon's, Brownhill's, Naylors and Nortons, the origins of these families are explored here, along with the companies they founded, the mills they built, the homes they lived in and people who worked for them. Much greater attention is paid to Denby Dale in this volume, its growth, its buildings and its people with almost an entire chapter been given over to archive photographs of the village. The Wesleyan Wood family are considered in detail, in particular, the adventures of the members of family who emigrated to Australia and were involved in the gold rush there. Some of the money they made found its way back to Denby Dale and helped to found the school, the history of which is also considered. The recollections of one of the typhoid victims from 1932 are also recorded for the first time. This book will appeal to family and local historians, nostalgia lovers and anyone with an interest in the districts of Denby Dale and Denby and the surrounding villages.
