The colour photographs in this book provide a souvenir of visits to Northumbria's long sandy beaches; the open moors and hills; the cities, towns and villages; the cathedrals, castles and country houses; the Roman forts; and, of course, Hadrian's Wall. The photographs are divided into four geographical areas, and each is prefaced by a brief selection of popular poetry inspired by the landscape or history of the English border. Poets include Swinburne, Wilfrid Gibson, Robert Surtrees and Basil Bunting. An introduction to the area provides itineraries for the visitor to the buildings, coast and countryside. Captions next to each photograph provide further information. In addition, itineraries are also supplied in French and German for the benefit of Northumbria's visitors and exchange students. Caroline and David Claughton are photographers specializing in the landscape of the North of England. Caroline is well known for her postcards of the region.
