Synopsis

The planting and cultivation of yew and box has long been an important element in garden design. This popular reprint of Nathaniel Lloyd's classic work now benefits from the addition of some 48 colour plates and a stimulating introduction by the author's son Christopher. Written in plain, straightforward English, the author explains precisely how to set about establishing a formal garden in yew or box. The text contains a refreshing abundance of common sense advice and invaluable tips and is a delight to read. Unlike so many other books on garden topics, the author does not merely explain what to do and then abandon the reader to get on with it. Rather, he continues to clarify and discuss what progress he has made in his own gardening efforts over a period of years and what results his readers may reasonably expect from their own labours. As well as a highly readable text, the book is lavishly illustrated with the author's own superb black and white photographs and colour plates, which serve to reinforce pictorially just what can be achieved. This very practical book will prove invaluable to anyone contemplating formal garden design while the special nature of the subject will also appeal to the casual reader with only an apparent passing interest in this relatively unfamiliar but fascinating aspect of garden design.
