Maths for Map Makers

Maths for Map Makers

by Dr . Arthur L . Allan (Author)

Synopsis

This work should help anyone who has problems with the mathematics involved in map making or who wishes to acquire a better grounding in the subject. It starts from an elementary standpoint in which no previous knowledge is assumed, and progresses to give the student a sufficient level of understanding to cope with most topics encountered by the map maker, including those of elementary surveying. A large number of worked examples is given, together with exercises (and answers), for the reader to perform. Access to computer spreadsheets, though encouraged, is not essential but it is assumed that a hand calculator is available. The selection of topics and level of treatment has been carefully tailored to avoid confusing the beginner with too much detail. Mathematical topics and concepts are presented in a problem-oriented manner which enables the relevance of each topic to be made clear. Useful formulae summaries are provided at the end of each chapter. The book should be found useful to students of geography, cartography, surveying, civil engineering and photogrammetry. It is also suitable for anyone, in industry or academia, who requires a reference work on the mathematics involved in map making.
