A hard, grafting forward in the typical South Island mould, he is also universally admired for his humility, honesty, generosity and warmth. Blackadder last year reached the dizzying heights of All Black Captain. While his success rate was only 50 per cent against the key opposition - South Africa, Australia and France - his popularity remained undiminished. He will probably be best remembered for his deeds with Canterbury in the NPC and the Canterbury Crusaders in the Super 12, where he led his side to three successive titles.
