The introduction to this guide to Sydney is divided into sections such as "Profile of Sydney" which includes a passage by the author as a "tourist" visiting Circular Quay and the harbour on a Saturday afternoon. "The Harbour in Dreamtime" tells the aboriginal stories about how the harbour was formed, and "Exiles at the World's Edge" documents the first white settlement. "Stylish Sydney" describes the grand vision of Governor Macquarie and where his Georgian style can still be found amongst the high-rise towers of 1990s Sydney. Other sections include "The Modern Icons: Harbour Bridge and the Opera House", "Around the Harbour by Ferry", "The Lively East: from Paddington to Double Bay" and "The Beguiling Beaches: from Cronulla to Palm Beach". The text then moves out to embody the day-tripping areas: the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley. The text and photographs cover the tourist attractions as well as the people and their lifestyle and activities in Sydney.
