Media Reviews
For centuries the Silk Road across Central Asia was the great trade route between East and West. Four British girls made a unique eight-month, 2000-mile journey by horse and camel along it through some of the least-known regions of the world. This book by one of the riders tells the story of that extraordinary journey. Their route had seen Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, the Great Game. No one else had completed this journey since the Middle Ages - one that took them through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, the Taklamakan Desert, mountains and wastelands, ending up in the terminus city of Xi'an in China. Alexandra Tolstoy's absorbing book records the extremes of landscape and climate, the people they met, friendships and tensions, camaraderie and adventures.
