EVENINGS WITH HOROWITZ

EVENINGS WITH HOROWITZ

by David Dubal (Author)

Synopsis

Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) was the most legendary pianist of the twentieth century - not since Liszt has anyone been renowned for such keyboard virtuosity. The highest paid concert artist in history, Horowitz won 23 Grammy awards and sold more records than any other classical artist. People queued days in advance for the chance to watch him perform. No one really knew how this man thought or how he lived - the mystery surrounding him was compounded when he disappeared from the concert stage for years without explanation. Evenings with Horowitz dispels the myth and paints a warm and vivid picture of this often tortured and isolated man. The author, David Dubal, first came into Horowitz's life when they collaborated on a series of award-winning interviews. Later, Dubal became a weekly guest at the Horowitz home. The book is an account of their passion for music and the piano. It reflects the struggles and triumphs of the Maestro, a genius who was also insecure and fearful of old age and the loss of his powers. Evenings with Horowitz covers a lifetime of musical wisdom with countless anecdotes from the musical world. Horowitz reveals the agony and ecstasy of a pianist's career, his friendships and rivalry, his love and awe for the great composers.
