For the Sake of Wales: The Memoirs of Gwynfor Evans

by Meic Stephens (Translator), Gwynfor Evans (Author)

Synopsis

Regarded by many as the most influential figure in contemporary Welsh society, Gwynfor Evans recalls his lifelong struggle for Welsh political freedom. Gwynfor Evans transformed Plaid Cymru from an intellectual pressure group to a successful political party and became the first Welsh Nationalist MP when he dramatically won the Carmarthen by-election in 1966. From this point, he dominated the Welsh political scene for over 15 years and made a major impact at Westminster. As the leader of the three Welsh Nationalist MPs in Parliament, Gwynfor Evans played a central role during Plaid Cymru's support for James Callaghan's minority Labour Government, from 1976 to 1979. He is also credited as the first person to force a U-turn from Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Government during the successful campaign to establish S4C - the Welsh fourth television channel. Gwynfor Evans is the author of Land of My Fathers .
