Flirting with Danger: Confessions of a Reluctant War Reporter

Flirting with Danger: Confessions of a Reluctant War Reporter

by SiobhanDarrow (Author)

Synopsis

Born in Belfast, Siobhan Darrow grew up in New Jersey in a home that was split between her proper Ulster mother and her Jewish father. Emotional strife and poverty were a way of life. After her father died Siobhan travelled to Russia to learn more about the man she could never know while alive. Quite unexpectedly, she married a Russian and became what she called a Cold War bride. He got a passport out - after 7 years of waiting - and she got a rare chance to live among ordinary Soviets in the days before the fall of communism. The marriage eventually fell apart. Siobhan fell into journalism and began years of travel and hair-raising visits to war zones becoming one of CNN's star reporters. Only after coming close to death, when she witnessed one too many killings first-hand, did she finally ask herself why she was always on the run, living in a state of panic and excitement, avoiding home and family. This is one version of typical modern woman, in very untypical circumstances.

Media Reviews
'Rather than adding to the heroic accounts of flak-jacketed foreign correspondants in danger zones, FLIRTING WITH DANGER is an altogether more candid account of what really preoccupies the war reporter on assignment. Siobhan Darrow tells her story- in fact, the very many stories- with an eye for telling details, with a relish for the absurd and, time and again, with disarming honesty.' FINANCIAL TIMES
