by Penelope Hobhouse (Preface), John Ferro Sims (Photographer), Susana Walton (Author)
Originally designed by English landscape architect Russell Page, the gardens of La Mortella on the island of Ischia in Italy's Bay of Naples have been more than 45 years in the making. Created by Lady Walton, widow of the English composer Sir William Walton, La Mortella is now home to some 1000 rare and exotic plants. The garden is open to visitors during the summer months. Canopied with tall trees, the garden contains fountains and rivulets, waterlily and lotus pools, scented palms, olive and citrus tree and exotic bromeliads and orchids. It is now part of the select Grandi Giardini Italiani (Great Italian Gardens) scheme, which comprises the most prestigious privately owned gardens in Italy. Royalties from the sales of this book about Lady Walton's garden go to the William Walton Trust, of which HRH The Prince of Wales is Patron.
