The Building of Liverpool Cathedral

The Building of Liverpool Cathedral

by PeterKennerley (Author)

Synopsis

Liverpool Cathedral is one of the greatest and largest church buildings in the world. Visitors marvel both at the scale and beauty of the great interior, while the building's towering profile dominates the skyline for miles around. Liverpool Cathedral was conceived and built entirely during the twentieth century, and its whole story is therefore fully documented in thousands of letters, papers and photographs. The author has had unlimited access to the archives and he has woven the facts into a fascinating and lively narrative which really does bring the characters and events to life. This book in fact tells two stories. First, there is the story of the building itself - its architect and craftsmen who worked in stone, brick, wood and glass - and Peter Kennerley, the former Cathedral Education Officer, knows that story better than anyone. Second, there is also the broader story of the building of a Cathedral community in the heart of a great modern city. The text is complemented by a stunning array of rare and beautiful illustrations.

Author Bio
Peter Kennerley was educated and has spent most of his professional life in Liverpool as a teacher, a lecturer, a cathedral education officer and, in a small way, as a writer. Through his enthusiasm for children's books, he received the Eleanor Farjeon Award for distinguished services to children's books in 1977, and in 1986 his services to education were marked by award of the MBE. Reluctant retirement has provided more time for writing, and enabled this biography of Dean Dwelly to reach publication during Liverpool Cathedral's centenary year.
