An Inspector Recalls

An Inspector Recalls

by Derek Sherborn (Author)

Synopsis

A remarkable book, written with wit and tinged with sadness. An Inspector Recalls is the autobiography of Derek Sherborn, who was one of the first listings inspectors to be appointed by the Ministry of Town and Country Planning. Sherborn saw much of Britain's cultural heritage destroyed during his working life, and struggled valiantly to save many beautiful buildings from wanton destruction by developers. A real insight into the mind of a man whose greatest love is the appreciation and preservation of important art in all its forms.

Author Bio
In 1947 Derek Sherborn was engaged as an investigator of historic buildings with the Ministry of Town and Country Planning. He played a personal role in saving several important monuments, not least Elvaston Castle in Derbyshire and the Grand Theatre. In 1976 he became principal investigator of historic buildings, and was later to run the Historic Buildings Council Garden committee. He took early retirement in 1982 on medical grounds - the same year that his house was burgled and he held at gunpoint. He relocated to Brighton, where he now lives, and became a member of the Regency Society. This led to his appointment as Vice Chairman of the Conservation Areas Advisory Service. In 1990 he was elected president of the Brighton Kingscliffe Society.
