Concise Guide to Customs of Minority Ethnic Religions

Concise Guide to Customs of Minority Ethnic Religions

by David Collins (Editor)

Synopsis

Much has been written on the subject of Community relations. This small book does not claim to add to this knowledge, but rather to distil it in a brief, orderly and accessible form for the everyday reader, who needs basic guidance for the purposes of everyday work. It makes no assumptions about existing understanding or interest on the part of the reader, and aims to enable readers to meet the needs of minority ethnic consumers in a more sensitive and respectful way. The guide begins with general notes on the Race Relations Act, and outlines some issues important in framing effective Equal Opportunities practise in organizations. It then proceeds to separate sections on Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism/Taoism/Confucianism (these ideas tend to be associated), and Rastafarianism. Each section is divided into modules dealing with symbols, languages and scripts, names, beliefs, prayer, religious festivals, dress, diet, medical treatment, social rules, birth customs and visiting. The guide summarizes important facts at a glance, and does not assume any prior knowledge on the part of the reader. It is intended for staff at all levels, where it is intended that an organization's services shall be equally available to all ethnic groups. The facts offered in the guide are useful in designing structures and services, in considering staffing needs, and in dealing with consumers face to face.
