But Can the Phoenix Sing?

by Christa Laird (Author)

Synopsis

At the end of SHADOW OF THE WALL, 15 year old Misha escapes through the sewers of Warsaw, having witnessed the deportation of Dr Korzcak and his own remaining sister. Now 30 years later, in letters written to his step son, Richard, he describes what happened after he was met by the remarkable girl, Eva and taken to live with a small band of partisans in the Parczow forest. In Spartan and dangerous conditions they procure arms, smuggle documents and save Jewish lives in innumerable ways which call for superhuman courage. Ultimately returning as a courier to Warsaw, Misha becomes involved in the uprising and is taken prisoner by the Germans. Told as a first person narrative, there is the added interest of the uneasy relationship between Misha and his English stepson.
