No Lovelier City

No Lovelier City

by PeterSomerville-Large (Foreword), Anthony Barry (Author)

Synopsis

This book celebrates the artistic achievement of Anthony Barry who captured the spirit of his native city of Cork in a remarkable collection of photographs. The photographs in this book are drawn from an archive of seven thousand pictures which portray Cork life in the 1950s and 1960s. Over twenty years, during his leisure time, he walked around Cork with his Leica and Rolliflex and took pictures of every aspect of the city. This collection contains images of women chatting, children, dogs, bicycles, old men, ships, water and buildings. It is a stark reminder of how much Cork and Ireland have changed in only forty years. His pictures capture the fashions and style of the 1950s and 1960s, the slower pace of life and the simplicity which dominated our lives at a time when fax machines and the internet were inconceivable.
