This seems a natural progression for famed organic herb-grower Jekka McVicar. From aromatic leaves to the flowers, this is a fascinating look at the centuries-old tradition of adding flowers and petals to food. Often with just as much flavour as leaves, they add a distinct piquancy and prettiness to dishes as diverse as salads, cakes and roast meats. Charmingly illustrated with the colourful photographs of Derek St Romaine, the pictures convey the delicacy of the flavours imparted by the blue lavender, the fiery orange of nasturtiums, the golden calendulas and the pretty pink bergamot. Recipes are innovative and occasionally daring - gooseberry and borage flower fool, honeysuckle buns, red cabbage and fennel flowers and stuffed courgette flowers - all imparted with easy-to-follow recipe instructions and, with each flower discussed, the propagation and cultivation details of the particular plant. This is an excellent book, highlighting herbs many talents in both kitchen and garden. -- Lucy Watson
Author Bio
Jekka McVicar has spent over 20 years growing herbs. She started her own nursery in 1987 and now sells over a quarter of a million plants each season. She began exhibiting at flower shows in 1991 and has now won 30 Royal Horticultural Society gold medals. Jekka has appeared on the BBC's Gardeners' World and lectures all over the UK.
