WEATHER SUN & US

WEATHER SUN & US

by Jillian Powell (Author), Joan Corlass (Illustrator)

Synopsis

Building on experiences from children's everyday lives, this book on the sun is part of a series which shows how weather is one of the wonders of the world around us. It teaches children about all aspects of the sun - from protecting themselves from its rays, to solar power and harvests. The book also includes information on the sun's use to plants animals - its part in the photosynthesis process. Many animals sunbathe and need the sunshine to warm their blood and give them energy. Without the sun, fruit would not ripen, but too much sun can be destructive. People living in cities, hot countries and deserts, where the heat from the sun is felt, have ways to counter the sun's effects. The use of solar power to create sea salt is described, as is solar energy and solar panelling. Through examples of the known behaviour of the Aztecs, Celts , Ancient Egyptians and the Druids of Stonehenge, the book describes the relationship the people of that time had with the sun. Difficult words used in the text are reinforced through a words to remember section.
