Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was a Jamaican campaigner who organised one of the first black nationalist movments to fight for the rights of black people. He brought pride, self-respect and hope for the future to black people all over the world by teaching them about their African heritage. Jacques Cousteau explorer, inventor, film maker and campaigner has spent much of his life campaigning on behalf of the environment and the world's wildlife. For over 50 years, Nelson Mandela campaigned for the abolition of apartheid in South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison. Four years after his release in 1990, he was elected president of South Africa. Martin Luther King (1929-1968) dedicated his life to the fight for equal rights for Black Americans, and achieved so much without once using violence.
