SUS HOT & COLD (Start-up-Science)

by JackChalloner (Author)

Synopsis

The scientific concepts of hot and cold are explained in this book which is one of a series intended to encourage children to explore the science of the world around them. The concepts are explained simply and are supported by activities on every page. Fact boxes are included. The book starts off by questioning what makes things hot and other things cold always supporting the explanation with a simple exercise that a young child can easily attempt. It them goes on to explain the concept of melting and freezing things; the measurement of heat and cold by a thermometer; and the need for insulation against the elements. Fuel, heat and oxygen necessary for a fire to be ignited are illustrated vividly to clarify combustion. Cooking food is possibly the easiest way to explain the change that takes place when food is heated. Not only heat from fire, a stove and a light is illustrated but also solar heat, volcanic hreat, geysers and reflected heat from the desert. Likewise cold temperatures arising out of natural states are explained such as snow at the top of mountains, ice in the Antarctic and freezing conditions on the moon. Finally, methods are discussed, which animals take to protect themselves against weather that is too hot or too cold, such as the design of their bodies (big ears on a desert fox), migration to warmer countries in winter and in other cases hibernation by sleeping through the coldest months of the year.
