  One of a series of books designed to present many different painter's views of a single subject. In this book the reader is taken on a personal gallery tour of 19 paintings of dogs. From an anonymous twelfth-century Spanish artist to such well-known painters as Francisco de Goya and George Stubbs, each person's vision and interpretation of dogs is unique. Marie Laurencin, a friend of Pablo Picasso's, included the Spanish artist and his mischievous dog, Frika, in Group of Artists . Inspired by African tribal art, Laurencin simplified the portraits into mask-like faces defined with bold outlines. Edward Hopper drew from memory to create the remote couple and their collie in his painting titles Cape Cod Evening . The painting evokes a mood of loneliness as a result of the fading autumnal light and the composition of the couple and their dog. The author's intend this book to inspire young readers to observe their own cherished pets and to use their imagination to see like a painter. Peggy Roalf has taught at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The cover design is by Joseph Guglietti.
