The rapidly changing political situation in Eastern Europe has created the need for a survey of the political map. This two volume work is compiled of essays on each country with consideration of the background to their existence as unitary states based on a sense of nationhood. The aim is to profile each of the nations of Eastern Europe, excluding the former German Democratic Republic and former Soviet Union successor states, since the complexity of these two areas calls for a separate volume. Volume I deals with the states of North-Eastern Europe and Volume II deals with South-Eastern Europe. The essays offer a concise evaluation of the territorial base and the critical events which have been significant for the development of the national identity and the creation of the state.
