by StephenLowe (Author)

Synopsis

Set in 1945 during the hundred days that elapsed between victory in Europe and victory in Japan, Touched follows the fortunes of a group of women in a working-class suburb of Nottingham. First staged at Nottingham Playhouse in 1977 by the then Artistic Director, Richard Eyre, Touched was so successful it transferred to the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 1981 in a new production by William Gaskill. Both productions were praised to the skies, and the play's reputation is still high. It has been out of print for many years. This new edition is published 25 years after its premiere at the Court and coincides with a performance there as part of the theatre's 50th-Anniversary celebrations.

Media Reviews
Stephen Lowe's Touched triumphantly repays a second viewing. It is a beautifully written piece effortlessly linking the private and public worlds Michael Billington, Guardian Touched is truly identified with working people and a radical vision, unlike many contemporary plays for which the same claim is made Time Out
Author Bio
Stephen Lowe was born in Nottingham in 1947 and went to Birmingham University. After six years of odd jobs, he joined Alan Ayckbourn's company in Scarborough, where his first play was staged, Comic Pictures, in 1976. Over a dozen stage plays followed, including Touched and Tibetan Inroads at the Royal Court and The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists for Joint Stock. In recent years he has written mainly for television, though his play about Brian Clough, Old Big 'Ead, was a hit around the country in 2005.
