His Dark Materials (NHB Modern Plays)

His Dark Materials (NHB Modern Plays)

by Philip Pullman (Author), Nicholas Wright (Author)

Synopsis

It is difficult to convey the scale of rapture - and of box-office revenue - created last Christmas by Nicholas Wright's dramatisation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. With every performance sold out even before the press-night, the National Theatre decided to bring the show back for an even longer run next Christmas - playing right through from November to end April. Nicholas Wright has revisited his adaptation, tightening and improving it, and this revised version is to be published alongside the re-opening.

'Unstageable' was the first reaction of the National Theatre's artistic director, Nicholas Hytner, to the idea of dramatising His Dark Materials. But last night's opening has triumphantly proved him wrong Sunday Times; 'Children's theatre of an uncommon maturity and ambition... dazzling in just the right way... Moments of heart-stopping simplicity...' Independent; 'Nicholas Wright... has risen to the challenge with brilliance' Mail on Sunday; 'The hottest ticket in town long before press day... Book to see it next Christmas...' Financial Times
