The handbook brings together information on the practice of psychology in order to provide a handy reference book of up-to-date information on psychology in the UK. Chapters on the main areas of professional practice - clinical, educational, occupational, criminological and legal, teaching and research, counselling, and health psychology - include information on the organization and structure of the profession, registration, qualifications and further training, pay, prospects and conditions. Issues which are relevant across the specializations, such as testifying as an expert witness, setting up in private practice, psychometrics, and Acts of Parliament are all discussed by experts in these fields. Section II of the book focuses on The British Psychological Society, the only scientific society and professional association of psychologists in the UK incorporated by Royal Charter. The aims and organization of the BPS, chartering, ethics, Disciplinary and Investigatory Committees are all explained. Section III concentrates on the important area of continuing professional development, with sections on publishing, conferences and workshops (both as participant and organizer), dealing with the media, conducting meetings and teleconferences, doing research and examining. The handbook concludes with an information and resources section, giving details of professional associations, computer hardware and software, psychological associations overseas, and sources of psychological journals and publications.
