Raised embroidery, or stumpwork as it was originally known, flourished in its original form during the 17th century. It is created by padding parts of the design or adding separate shapes to a background, and then applying needlelace or embroidered pieces to the ground fabric. This art has recently been enjoying a revival and its popularity is spreading worldwide due in part to the work of the Hirsts and their first book, Raised Embroidery.
