The Diaries of Sylvia Townsend Warner (Virago classic non-fiction)

by Claire Harman (Editor), Claire Harman (Editor), Sylvia Townsend Warner (Author)

Synopsis

For Sylvia Townsend Warner the diaries she kept from 1927 to 1978 became the equivalent of an intimate correspondent to whom she could describe and ponder the details of her life. From her thoughts on love, friendship, writing and death to the antics of her cats and her plans for her garden, she gives us a self-portrait replete with anecdotes and rich observation. Above all, her diaries are a poignant account of her great love affair with Valentine Ackland, an affair that brought both anguish and liberation.

Media Reviews
'Sylvia Townsend Warner's heartfelt and heartbroken Diaries give the condensed account of a life at once unassuming and passionate in its devotions to people and to writing' Andrew Motion, OBSERVER 'Will surely become a classic among English diaries' John Carey, SUNDAY TIMES 'A delight' LITERARY REVIEW 'In the diary's best moments, one does not feel simply that there is method in the madness of her eccentricities; one stands momentarily convinced that she speaks more directly and- even more logically- than other writers do. The resulting exhileration goes beyond what is provided by plain literary excellence.' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 'A book whose hold over the reader grows until he is sad to part with the personality and the clear, observant, delicate prose of its courageous and dignified subject.' SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY 'Superb.' GAY TIMES 'A book to savour.' COUNTRY LIFE 'Her writing is not only inimitable but also indescribable. It's like her secret recipe for chestnut jam. You need to taste it for yourself.' LITERARY REVIEW 'this selection richly illustrates the depth and sensitivity of Warner's inner life.' SUNDAY TIMES
