Christina Stead (1902-1983) has been compared to such widely differing authors as Daniel Defoe, D.H.Lawrence and Vladimir Nabokov. She was born in Australia but lived much of her life in Europe and America with her husband, novelist and political economist William Blake. Caught up in the left wing politics of the time, she was investigated by the FBI for un-American activities, and banned for obscenity in the USA and Australia. She continued throughout to write her passionate novels which were to win her world renown.
