Wasting Girls' Time (Virago education)

Wasting Girls' Time (Virago education)

by Dena Attar (Author)

Synopsis

This critique of domestic subjects in schools investigates why and how they were first included in the school curriculum, their effect on girls' education, and the history of feminist polemic surrounding them. Focusing on the struggle to defend, upgrade and modernize these subjects despite their traditional relegation to the female domain, the author confronts the problem of how girls can secure access to an education which is not geared towards their subordination. She asks where boys fit in and how the courses developed with them in mind have affected the nature of this work in school. She asks, in effect, whether home economics should be taught at all. Her arguments raise questions for the current debate about curriculum and education's relevance to everyday life.
