Synopsis

For centuries, Borneo, the third largest island in the world, was an unexplored wilderness. Even today, much of its mystery still remains. The tropical rainforest that extends from coast to coast covering mountains and contours, conceals much colour and life. This study, illustrated with over 200 colour photographs and historic prints, takes a look at a country that has long attracted explorers, scientists, traders and historians. With each chapter, the story of Borneo is revealed: its long and chequered history from earliest civilizations through the changes wrought to its culture by Asian and European influences; the Bornean peoples - hunters, nomads and farmers all with their distinctive lifestyles; the diversity of the island's flora and fauna; the rivers, mountains, forests and swamps that have seen little change in millennia; and Borneo's development and survival in the twentieth century. The wildlife and traditional societies of Borneo face many threats as the modern world encroaches. The management of land, the growth of commerce, the introduction of industry, conflicting loyalties to old and new ways of life, are all leaving their mark. Governments and conservation organizations are striving to protect the natural heritage, and there is still much to be achieved.
