by B . J . Adab (Author)
This second book in the series of Annotated Texts for Translation complements the first (Annotated Texts for Translation: French - English, Multilingual Matters, 1993) by offering the opportunity to practise a systematic approach to identifying the problems of translation, working from English to French. The contents include a discussion of different approaches to the process of translation, with a selection of Source Texts in English. For each Source Text there is a suggested Target Text together with detailed Annotations on the problems for translation posed by each text. The source texts have been selected to cover a range of topics of contemporary relevance and native speakers have contributed to the production of the Target Texts. This book is intended either for undergraduate study as part of a language course, or for individual study and self-improvement by would-be or practising professional translators. The level of difficulty and subject range of the texts is also intended to help the student to prepare for professional examinations such as the Diploma in Translation of the Institute of Linguists. The book guides students towards the development of a systematic approach to the task of translation, through an increased awareness of potential problems and critical evaluation of suggested solutions.
