Children with Special Needs: Assessment, Law and Practice - Caught in the Act

Children with Special Needs: Assessment, Law and Practice - Caught in the Act

by John Friel (Author), Harry Chasty (Author)

Synopsis

This book covers the assessment of and procedure for children who have greater difficulty learning than the majority of children their age. It challenges the "innate skill" theory of learning, which assumes that children's ability to learn is unalterable. The authors argue that the dynamic view of learning, shared by many psychologists and educationalists, still remains to be applied to the practice of educating, especially educating children with special needs. Learning is itself a learned skill and therefore can and should be taught. "Caught in the Act" includes a detailed analysis of the nature of the problem itself with an explanation of how the child should be assessed and what the parents should be able to expect for the educational service. It is also a guide to the law and practice concerning special needs and includes a detailed analysis of the changes brought by the 1988 Education Reform Act.
