Walking in the Bavarian Alps (Walking Overseas)

Walking in the Bavarian Alps (Walking Overseas)

by Grant Bourne (Author), SabineKorner-Bourne (Author)

Synopsis

The Bavarian Alps, lying on the German - Austrian border, have a charm all of their own. No Matterhorns or Mont Blancs here, but an equally picturesque blend of valleys, foothills, gorges and mountain peaks that lie virtually on the doorstep of the local towns. Strewn along the edge of the alps are beautiful lakes, fairy-tale castles, churches and villages waiting to be enjoyed and explored after a walk in the mountains or on 'rest' days. Fifty seven excellent walks are described by the authors, covering the Allgau, Ammergau, Wetterstein, Tegernsee, Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden alps. Each area has its own attractive centres such as Oberammergau, Garmish - Partenkirchen and Bad Reichenhall. Walks vary from strolls of a few miles to 3 or 4 day outings with Alpine hut stopovers and many are circular. They can be confidently undertaken by anyone who is reasonably fit. The delights of the Bavarian scenery added to a temperate climate, a good choice of accommodation and eating places, and good transport access make for an excellent holiday destination.
