Billie Morgan

Billie Morgan

by JoolzDenby (Author)

Synopsis

?My name is Billie Morgan. And I am a murderer.? Billie is in her forties, running a little jewellery shop in Bradford, watching over her godson Natty, trying to live a quiet life, trying to forget the past. Because Billie has a lot of past to forget. She was a biker chick, one of the Devil's Own, real hardcore seventies Angels, speed and acid-fuelled road demons. She lived a life that was hurtling out of control and it ended in murder. Now, years later, she has to face the consequences. Beautifully written, dark but never despairing, Billie Morgan is a perfect fusion between social realism and classic noir; a powerful, passionate novel about an inability to wipe evil from the slate of our lives. Taut like a Greek tragedy, the book is a moving, empathetic account of a woman?s heroic attempt to escape her destiny.

Media Reviews
So gripping that it practically arm-wrestles the reader into its pungently murderous Northern plot... often hilarious portrayal of a woman defying the old fashioned corsetry of 'femininity' -- ?Daily Telegraph ?There are speed-freaks, severed heads, midnight burials and extreme sexual deviance in this book, but its eventually apocalyptic tone doesn?t disguise how recognisable its suffering is if you?ve ever stumbled under Britain?s civilised * Denby joins the like of Helen Walsh in finally putting vivid female rebels on the page? Uncut *
For me this is the best book, so far, of 2004. It works on all levels, containing strong writing and good plotting, believable characters, a good mix of light and shade... Highly recommended -- The Barcelona Review ?Haunting and lyrical, with a quietly devastating conclusion, Billie Morgan is that rare beast: a novel that speaks profoundly of loss, of sacrifice, and of pain, yet never loses sight of the one immutable truth that, without love, w * revenge and eventual redemption. It?s also a remarkable meditation on the dark side of the flower-power hippie generation? Diva *
