Our Word is Our Weapon: Selected Writings

Our Word is Our Weapon: Selected Writings

by Jose Saramago (Introduction), Subcomandante Marcos (Author)

Synopsis

Emillano Zapata - leader of the legendary 1911 revolution in Mexico - is the inspiration behind today's Zapatista revolution in Mexico. But today's revolution is different in one core aspect - the presence at the revolution's core of the fair-skinned, urban, university educated poet-warrior-spokesman, Subcomandante Marcos. Marcos has created a unique fusion between 'the two Mexicos': the one white/mestizo, modern and western, the other traditional. For the first time, a bridge has been built between both sides, a bridge so powerful that it now seems possible for the indigenous peoples to achieve rights for indigenous peoples and democracy, justice and liberty for all. The first of three sections, 'Unvelling Mexico' sets out the social and political situation in Mexico. 'Beneath the Mask' contains the 'Sup's' most philosphical and literary writings while 'Creating Memory' has tales and tables from the deeper forces that shape the Zapatistas' project, and which display Marcos' playfulness, personality and humour.
