Darker Days than Usual

Darker Days than Usual

by SuzannahDunn (Author)

Synopsis

During, one long, shining summer of school trips, games in the playground, amber limbs in the long grass and sudden rain, the secretary puzzles over why her assistant, Laura, is increasingly wan and withdrawn. Bit by bit she pieces together the real, disturbing story of the two sisters' past before she turns, invevitably and painfully, to her own. Suzannah Dunn gives us stories of the suburbs which are as brittle as they are funny. Her observations snip away at home life until, little by little, we discover the secret truths women find so difficult to tell.

Media Reviews
Susannah Dunn is a new writer, with a brilliant touch. This collection, a novella and short stories, have a wonderful wit and a splendid sense of indirection...Her dissections of the quiet hell of family life are splendid, and she has an absolutely convincing voice of her own * Malcolm Bradbury *
A highly promising writer whose work shows a haunting grasp of the unease which lurks in the apparent calm of suburban landscapes * City Limits *
Suzannah Dunn writes wonderfully well about families - the tensions between sisters, mothers and daughters. Funny and bleak at the same time, her stories with their uncomfortable attention to the detail of daily life are totally captivating. * Kate Pullinger *
