Terrorism: Inside a World Phenomenon

Terrorism: Inside a World Phenomenon

by Barry Davies (Author)

Synopsis

Terrorism is a phenomenon that affects us all and this reference work by SAS veteran Barry Davies exposes the true nature of modern terrorism, from its origins to the predicament we find ourselves in today. Terrorism, once epitomised by a few hijackers seizing an aircraft to highlight their grievance, has come of age in the 21st century. Yet who are these people? What is Al Qaeda and how does it work? Who funds the IRA? Why does ETA want independence? How does HAMAS recruit its seemigly endless supply of suicide bombers? Can we hope to counter this multipilicity of terror which threatens our world? This work examines every major terrorist group and act since World War II, including the Iranian embassy siege, September 11th and the suicide bombings in Israel.

Media Reviews
This is a comprehensive terrorism reference book by a former member of the SAS. A couple of years ago it would have been slightly puzzling where to shelve such a book in a bookshop. Politics? History? Sociology? But now most bookshops have entire sections set aside for terrorism, suddenly a growth area in contemporary publishing. In fact, terrorism occupies a sizeable part of most non-fiction new title displays. There is something grimly opportunistic about such output, and the suspicion is surely well founded that you can have too many good books about bad news. This, however, is an authoritative one-volume work of reference, usefully drawing together a huge amount of information culled from many disparate sources.
