Before captaining the 1999 European team at Brookline, Mark James had played in seven previous Ryder Cup matches. English Amateur Champion in 1974, he joined the European Tour two years later and has rarely finished outside the top 20 of the Order of Merit since. He has won eighteen times in Europe and has collected more than [pound]3 million in prize money. In the aftermath of the publication of Into the Bear Pit, Mark resigned as Sam Torrance's right-hand man for this year's Ryder Cup at The Belfry.
