Synopsis

The Starting Science series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of full page impact photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find that they are involving the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, depending on their ability. They are designed to be easily accessible to parents or teachers. Information on light in this book is closely linked to practical activities, so that children can learn from first-hand experience. Topics investigated include how light is produced and how it is reflected and refracted. Children are told that light travels in straight lines and also how colours can be mixed. Investigations with colour and pattern show their importance in the natural world and how they can play tricks on the eyes.
