  The Starting Science series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of full-page impact photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find they are involving the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, depending on their ability. In this book, through investigations and boat-making activities children explore the forces that determine whether an object floats or sinks.
